The Managing and Administering Controlled Drugs Awareness course is designed for healthcare professionals in care homes and other healthcare settings, providing essential training in the safe handling, administration, and disposal of controlled drugs. This course aligns with the latest UK legal and regulatory frameworks, including the Misuse of Drugs Act, Health and Social Care Act, and associated guidelines, ensuring compliance and patient safety. Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of controlled drug classification, storage, documentation, and administration.

  • Be aware of the legislation and best practice which governs the management of controlled drugs

  • Describe why some medicines are classified as controlled drugs

  • Describe the different schedules of controlled drugs, and which controlled drugs fit into which schedules

  • Demonstrate how to establish which controlled drugs require safe custody

  • Explain the role and requirements of the medicines witness

  • Demonstrate how to correctly receive, administer, dispose of, and balance check controlled drugs, and how to accurately record this

  • Understand the rules and recording requirements when a person self-medicates with a controlled drug

  • Demonstrate how to deal with stock discrepancies

  • Demonstrate how to correct errors in the Controlled Drugs Register
